10 Ways to Manage Your Anxiety

October 6th- 12th is mental health awareness week. We know that lots of cuties out there have experienced some difficulties with their mental health. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health and its super important to make sure you look after yourself or try to help a friend that may be struggling 💕

We’ve put together our top 10 tips for managing one of the most common mental health issues, anxiety.

1. Take it one day at a time

Making sure you allow yourself to take every day as it comes will reduce a lot of pressure that you might be putting on yourself.

The physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety can be very uncomfortable and you might want to get rid of them very quickly. But by allowing yourself enough time to deal with how you’re feeling can really help you manage your emotions. Don’t panic that you’re not feeling better in one day, these things take time.

2. Relaxation techniques - meditation apps

Relaxation techniques are great for when your anxiety is being a real pain in the peach. There’s lots of meditation apps out there designed to help calm your mind and allow you to bring your attention back to you rather than your anxious thoughts. Headspace is a great app with lots of options and methods to choose from to calm a busy brain.

 3. Write things down

We may not feel like keeping an Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging style journal every single day but just writing down some of your thoughts can be super helpful if you’re feeling a little overwhelmed. Try to write down the main thought that’s bothering you and some ideas that might help you to feel more comfortable to deal with or overcome it.

4. Don't be a perfectionist

Nobody’s perfect! Even some of our idols that seem super perfect on the outside struggle with anxious thoughts and feelings.

Pretending that you’re super perfect and not feeling a little anxious isn’t going to make your anxiety go away. Its best to allow yourself to acknowledge your anxiety then try techniques to manage the thoughts and feelings as best you can. Don’t be embarrassed to admit when you need to take a sec to feel more grounded.

5. Exercise - Yoga

Exercise isn’t just good for your body, its great for your mind too. Exercise releases endorphins to help lift your mood and can also help a busy mind concentrate on something. Yoga is a great exercise for those who want something low impact. Yoga is based on stretching alongside breathing techniques to help calm your mind and body.

6. Talk to a friend

Pop the kettle on, grab a choccy biscuit and have a chat with your bestie. If you’re feeling a little anxious or down lately your friends will be there to support you. Something as simple as speaking out loud about how you’re feeling can make you feel so much better! Don’t ever be afraid to ask for a little chat, you never know, your friends might also need some help too!

7. Slowly expand your comfort zone

Leaving your comfort zone can be scary and fill you with anxiety. But gently trying to expand your comfort zone can really help with your anxiety long term. For example, maybe speaking in front of a crowd is your worst nightmare; first try speaking in front of 1 person, then 2 then 3 and work your way up!

8. Be kind to yourself

When your anxiety is being a bit of a diva, try not to get upset or angry. We have thousands of thoughts every day that come and go like waves and we don’t beat ourselves up over every single one so just be kind to yourself and accept that its something everyone experiences in life at one time or another.

9. Look after you

If you find you’re having a rough time with your anxiety, sometimes a little rest and relaxation can be just what you need. So chuck on some Adele, smother on a facemask and have a soak in a bubble bath and just chill babe! Don't feel guilty for needing a little you time!

 10. Therapy

Funnily enough, therapy is one of those things where some people still get a bit ‘ahh’ about. But if you find your anxiety is showing up more often, then it might be time to ask for some help. Don’t wait until anxiety is completely ruling your life. Having someone to chat to on a regular basis or CBT therapy might be a great way to start to really tackle those thoughts and feelings.

If you don't know where to start, try having a chat to your GP who should be able to point you in the right direction!

Anxiety can be a real pain, but with the right approach and a little help, it can be managed and you will be okay!
